I haven't played much Connections this year, but that purple category is one of the more oddly specific category titles I've seen.

Anyone else do the Mini Crossword? I've been doing it daily for a while. This is my time for Saturday's (usually the slightly bigger one for the week) as it updates before midnight: 3:36

I've kind of stopped doing daily puzzles. Used to like a few wordle variants and some sudokus. Pips is keeping my interest for now, but idk for how long.

Tbh, I'd like to do more cryptics, but I don't want to spend the time learning and internalizing the rules. They do seem fun otherwise.

I recommend it. The rules aren't really all that complicated.

Like cryptics will seem like nonsensical alchemy but when you know how they work, you can pretty much always see where the answers came from.

I tried it a couple days ago when you posted about it. The answer did make sense afterwards for sure. It could be more that maybe I'm not that into verbal puzzles.

I'll give it another shot later. These things tend to grab me at the get go or not at all. Sadly it's probably the latter for me for this one.

@canadaguy was today's especially easy for this? It was the first thing I thought of but then I took a clue to be sure and then felt dumb for not just guessing it

I found it pretty easy.

A four letter answer narrows down what you can use for the wordplay, so then you kind of have a choice of what might be the indicator, and one is pretty easy to eliminate then

Another 4 letter one today, but I'm happy I got it without needing to verify with a hint first:

Minute Cryptic - 25 August, 2025
"Forger's initial on map - it shows treasure spot! Buried gold is fake..." (4)

It took me a sec, since I was a bit surprised that it was so much clue for such a small answer. But then it came together fairly easy.

It's nice to have someone to at least talk about these a bit. My mom taught me cryptics, but these are baby level easy for her, so she doesn't do them.

I've always been weary to take them on because I first saw them while watching Cracking the Cryptic on YouTube. A one off like this is much more manageable.

I’m still not sure how you know which words are indicators or any of the other things
You kind of learn over time.

Like anything that denotes mixing could be an anagram indicator, but also something like "crazy" could too

Helpful is that the definition will almost always be at the beginning or end, so you can try to break it down from there

I love cracking the cryptic. I went through a phase a few years back where it was like the only thing I watched on yt. (made me better at sodoku too)
They definitely helped me up my Sudoku game for sure. Simon is always a joy to watch. I go in and out of watching them solve puzzles, and I'm sure I'll be back to watching some when I'm struggling to sleep after the baby comes.

edit: also Sheryl noticed me watching them at one point, and the next time we visited her parents she mentioned that I like sudoku to her mom, who does the newspaper one every morning. Her mom was stuck on one and said "if you finish this, you can marry her" (this was while we were engaged) - thanks to some of the tricks I learned from the channel I managed to get it done. We now have that puzzle framed somewhere in the house.

Im not a big sudoku guy, but I enjoy watching him solve cryptics. Especially when he finds a clue to be especially clever, just the joy he finds is so nice.

This one was a bit sloppy to me. Wordplay is fine, but the definition portion could be tightened up
