2024 Olympics in Paris

I wish I cared... it feels like one of those events like All-Star games that used to be must-watch because there was little access to it in the past. It was a special treat to see a team from across the country or international athletes. Now it's so commonplace to see everything it doesn't feel special to me, or anyone around me.

When a once in a generation athlete like Phelps, Bolt, or Bilas come around I'll tune in, otherwise it just doesn't interest me.

Gymnastics is the main one I watch in the summer. Simone Biles is still there and the rest of team USA is looking pretty strong.

Still got Ledecky in the pool as well, so I'll probably check out some of the swimming events as well. We tend to record everything and watch on fast-forward until something good comes up though.

I do get it. I personally put the World Cup ahead simply because it's a sport I'm invested in year-round. One issue is that because many of the sports are low-key outside of the Olympics it can be hard to get that same level of emotional investment.

I mostly watch the Athletics (track & field), which is definitely more popular in Europe as a general spectator sport. I'll also check out the swimming since I knew people in the college system and that got me into it a bit.

I have a cousin who's in the rowing for NZ (and won a gold medal last Olympics), so I'll watch him.

I like watching the basketball, and all the events I did as a teen - and anything else NZ might be highly competitive in. In fact I'll watch whatever. But Paris is about as far away as possible as can be from me so I'll really only make effort for the rowing.

I forgot it was the year for the olympics.

But I did hear on the radio that Snoop Dogg carried the torch. That's pretty dope.

Bro probably thought it was a huge blunt.
I don't know about him carrying the torch, but he did carry an NBC mic for an interview with Simone Biles' family. They also said there would be more Snoop on broadcasts.

Snoop is surprisingly tall. I thought he was an average height, but he's apparently 6'4". He absolutely towered over everyone else on the screen, especially the Biles family members.

Don't give a shit about the Olympics, but Gojira performing at the opening ceremony was kind of awesome tbh. Definitely a much heavier band than I would ever expect to play something like that.
Definitely this. I never give a crap about the opening ceremonies, but this was literal fire.

I think everyone towers over Simone Biles, even toddlers. She's just always so shockingly small in interviews.

But yeah being 6'4" it's rare to not be above the rest of the crowd. It's only people like Eye that make you think "holy shit they're tall".

The Paris games is supposedly the cheapest games of the 21st century. They've done a fantastic job at basically turning their city into one big temporary venue.

I think Paris is showing how a host city is supposed to do these games. Any city that actually spend money building permanent white water rafting rivers for the games are morons. Paris only built two new facilities. A housing development and a pool and you know they intend to get the most out of those facilities after the games are over.

Boy this distraction stuff really fucking sucks. Okay the Turkey guy is funny. But the boxer stuff. And the absolute garbage that is being thrown at Biles. Comments about her hair because they are trying to find something to throw shade.

If a man (like Phelps) is genetically gifted, he is lucky and amazing. If it's a woman, it's cheating.

So so frustrated. So many extra things women athletes have to go through that have nothing to do with the sport

"But women who are awesome at what they do are totally scary and threatening!" 🙄

I think it sucks that in this day and age people still think this way.. Can't we just be glad and support people who have the drive and dedication to do something like excelling in their field? No fucking matter what they have or don't have between their legs, or whatever they identify as being? Let people be whoever they are meant to be!

It's awful what's happening, and unfortunately, it's a consequence of transphobia running rampant and not just allowed, but encouraged.

It goes beyond trans people being targeted, but any woman who appears to be "suspect" based on gendered stereotypes of what people think a woman is.

Wouldn't surprise me if there were more rules put in place to bar any woman that is deemed suspicious based on those stereotypes. This bullshit needs to stop. We should be beyond this point now.

Oh absolutely, it's happening more and more that cisgender women are being targeted because they don't "look" like women, whatever that means. Don't get wrong, I acknowledge that I look like a fucking monster, an absolute dumpster fire of a human being, but women come in all shapes and sizes.

The women's golf tournament has had a LOT of leaderboard changes. The course they're on looks hard as fuck. Lots of water hazards and the ladies are not playing it safe with some of their shots. There's no money on the line, either you get a medal or you get nothing. A Swiss lady was the leader for a chunk of yesterday and is now well out of medal placement.

SmackDown on that Tard.

Hey, don't wanna be a jerk but can we not use that term? Been seeing it and the longer version cropping up a lot again on social media like it's acceptable again and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Or maybe I'm just being too sensitive?

100% this. It's a fuzzy area since we're referring to Kelly, aka Smackfellow, but in general it's not a word we want to see around the forum.

Fair, I'll own up to having developed a bad habit of using that word. I really need to work on that.
