What Ya Drinkin'?

I've been looking for new drinks to drink, lately. Been getting tired of Malibu Black and Pineapple, though it's not bad. I've been combining sweet and sour with a lot of things, lately. Whiskey sours. Rum sours. Cognac sours. Looking for new, simple, but good mixes. Plus to drinks that don't use stuff with tons of sugar, and especially no HFCS(I say this, knowing the sweet and sour mix I use has it in it). What do you ask for at a bar? Or make yourself, as the case may be. You can mention them, but I'm not going all Long Island Iced Tea or Adios, Motherfucker levels of complexity.

There. Made a post.

My first choice drink for many a year has been Guinness and remains so.
I'm looking forward to then releasing the zero alcohol version in Australia so I can continue to enjoy the taste when it's not perhaps appropriate to be drinking beer.
I always prefer beer, then wine, then mixed drinks, but I assumed this thread was for mixed drinks

Kamikaze? So it's just vodka, triple sec, and lime juice? Too bad it's after 10, or I'd get the lime juice. Stupid early-closing grocery store. Tomorrow.

My two go-to's are easy to make at home. Since you mentioned Cognac I'll start with the Side Car.

2 parts cognac
1 part orange liquer
1 part lemon juice
Serve chilled

My favorite though is the Negroni for the bitterness and deep flavor of Campari

1 part Campari (Substitute Aperol for less bitterness)
1 part Dry Gin
1 part Sweet Vermouth
Serve chilled, though I do like it room temp.

You can swap out Gin for Bourbon to make it a Boulevardier which is also good.

Orange Liqueur is just triple sec, yeah? Wish I saw this message before I got home, I would have gotten lemon juice, too. Those both sound pretty great. Making that kamikaze in a minute anyway, though.
...

I am once again reminded of how much I am not a fan of limes. I don't know why I keep trying, I really don't. Though the last swallow was oddly better than the rest. Dunno why. I'll have to try the S&S version later.

I prefer water, milk, or soda. I had a really bad experience with liquor. First with my father and his wife who were functioning alcoholics and then I had an experience I'll never forget. I became so depressed that I considered suicide. It was the worst kind of darkness in my mind pulling me down. Hopelessness & no sense of control. I really contemplated taking my own life that night. The next day, I vowed never to touch alcohol again.

Solid choice, suicidal ideation is nothing to mess with, that's for sure.

It was all great when I was doing jello shots with my sister and my ex wife. It tasted amazing. But it came at a cost. It started to change me. I didn't like how it made me feel. Those feelings were nothing at all like I've ever felt before. It's like I stepped into a place in my mind that I had never been before. Felt a depression that I cannot describe. I now understand why people commit suicide.

I know the feeling, I've been there and I've crossed the line on more than one occasion, it's an awful, awful place to be. I'm glad you saw your way to avoiding a means of reaching that place.

You never know how a drug will affect you until you try it, and not everything is for everyone. Mean drunks are a thing, and so are depressive ones. It is a depressant by nature, after all. It's unfortunate having to find it out in practice and in the wild, but I suppose there's no other way to do it really. It's good you made it through the night. I (almost) never get that myself, so I keep going, as I like the positives over the negative.
Some strains of marijuana have a considerable depressive effect on me, and most don't. I never know until I smoke it. Not that it stops me, but that's me and my bad life choices.

In less serious news, I do now have lemon juice, so I'll be giving that side car a shot, literally speaking. I've heard of that one before, but never had it. And here I am with all this cognac.
